Pirtle, Dr. H. Winston, DVM, JD
Dr. Pirtle is a native of Montgomery County, having grown up on a dairy farm south of the city. He is the only person in our association that is both a licensed attorney and a licensed doctor of veterinary medicine. Dr. Pirtle is a graduate of Jones School of Law and was admitted to practice law in Alabama in 1999. He has been appointed to cases in the area of criminal appeals as well as having practiced in the areas of criminal defense and domestic law. His practice focuses on animal law generally as well as those cases involving veterinary medical practice. He has served as co-counsel in several cases involving the defense of veterinarians before the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. Dr. Pirtle received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Auburn University in 1967. He established Snowdoun Veterinary Hospital in 1973 and practiced general (large animal and small animal) veterinary medicine there until he sold the practice in 2005 and now is employed by practices throughout Alabama as a relief veterinarian when they require his services in a veterinarian’s absence. Dr. Pirtle has served two terms as president of the Alabama Veterinary Medical Association. He was recognized as that association’s Veterinarian of the Year in 1988 and received its Distinguished Service Award (the association’s highest honor) in 2008. He was appointed to the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners, serving as its president in 1990. Dr. Pirtle has always had an interest in licensing issues involving the practice of veterinary medicine, and as such served on the board of the American Association of Veterinary State Boards. That association elected him its president for the years 1995 and 1996. Dr. Pirtle has just finished a several-year commitment on the wellness committee of the Alabama V.M.A, serving two years as that committee’s chair. Currently he holds both the positions of treasurer of the Alabama V.M.A. and of its alternate delegate to the American Veterinary Medical Association. At his alma mater at Auburn, Dr. Pirtle has served on the university president’s Agricultural Advisory Committee and on the alumni advisory council at the veterinary college. He continues his engagement with the college by presenting lectures to veterinary students on legal and licensing issues on a part-time basis. When his two professions are not calling, you will find him and his wife, Christina in or about their Montgomery county home in the Snowdoun community, where they own a cattle farm and “Pirtle’s Puddle”, a fishing lake that is open to the public. He has three married children, five grandchildren and one stepson. Dr. Pirtle is a member of the Alabama State Bar, the Montgomery County Bar Association and the American Veterinary Medical Law Association.
